Engine Carbon Clean – £99 well spent!
Can Hydrogen really fix a car?
My wives daily driver an Audi A5 3.0TDi Quattro recently came up with a MIL (engine management light).
So being a bit of a gadget man I got out my bluetooth OBDII reader and fired up Torque on my phone.
The app showed the following code -P0401 – Powertrain Exhaust Gas Recirculation Flow Insufficient Detected
I checked on several forums and this is a fairly common code that appears on most manufacturers vehicles, the first few posts I read filled me and my wallet with large amounts of dread!!!
I really did not fancy pulling things apart in my engine bay and worse still trying to clean off years of coked up deposits.
Thinking back to an episode of Wheeler Dealers I remembered Edd China using an automated system to clean out the engine, a bit of googling later and I found the Terraclean system.
Whoop Whooop!!! this could be the answer to my (and my wallets) prayers! unfortunately as the Terraclean system goes in to the fuel rails and not in to the induction system, I doubted that it would clean the entire engine.
But I did find another system that is designed to clean all the way through from the Air intake.
The other system has received great reviews on the Audi forums as well as many other vehicle specialists.
About the Engine Carbon Clean system
The system made in the UK by Engine Carbon Clean, uses Electrolysis and tap water to produce pure Hydrogen, which is then drawn in to the cars air intake under vacuum to clean off carbon deposits.
Whilst this sounds a bit hard to believe, how can simply running a gas through my cars induction system clean up years of baked on carbon deposits?…
Having read their website and the growing number of satisfied customers on forums evidence seems to back up the claims.
I contacted the Essex Franchise holder and spent some time chatting about the system and booked in the car for an Engine Carbon Clean.
The Essex area for Engine Carbon Clean is covered by Gavin Wing he is based in South woodham Ferris and has an auto mechanics workshop where he and the team carry out vehicle repairs and now the Engine Carbon cleans.
Gavin advised that the Engine Carbon Clean side of the business is steadily growing, once people have had their cars cleaned and felt the many benefits such as increased response, restored HP and torque they tend to be very vocal about it to their friends and families.
Whilst most people come up to the workshop to have their engines cleaned, Gavin and the team are also able to offer a mobile service covering most parts of Essex.
Running the system
Having arrived Gavin first went through the cars diagnostics to check for existing fault codes, I was happy to see that my cheapy bluetooth OBDII reader showed the same fault code as his (much more expensive) reader.
Next Gavin started up the engine and hooked up the Hydrogen cleaner to the A5’s intake and started up the system.
Two separate timers are used for monitoring the clean, one set to 30mins the overall clean time and another set to let Gav know when to apply throttle to the vehicle.
Throughout the process Gavin monitored the reader looking for variations in throughput and % of carbon etc, as the first timer went off Gavin applied throttle to the vehicle to get the EGR valve moving.
After 30 minutes and several applications of the throttle had passed, I was asked to take the car out for a 10 minute drive to see how it felt but also to give the car a chance to stretch its legs.
Whilst I was optimistic about how the car might drive (having read the reviews), I still felt somewhat apprehensive that it could wield that much of a difference…
I was not disappointed!!!!
I returned back to the workshop and Gavin once again connected the car to the system and gave it an additional 15 minutes running.
The car has always felt fairly rapid, thanks to its 3.0TDi engine, but now it was clearly revving quicker and felt much smoother! it was almost as though the car was in Dynamic rather than Auto.
Another thing that was noticeable was that the engine sound had changed, its hard to describe but the engine now sounds quieter and more refined.
If your car is running a little lumpy or you are having emissions based error codes or if you just fancy giving your car a well deserved treat, the Engine Carbon Clean is a definite must!
Gavin has kindly offered a £5 discount for Essex based gadgetz.tv readers who would like to get their engines cleaned, to take advantage of the offer, contact Gavin direct by phone or Facebook and quote the code gadgetz816
I would like to say a big thanks to Gavin for making gadgetz.tv so welcome in the workshop, but more importantly for providing a cost effective fix for my wives car that came with the added benefits of restored throttle response and HP and all for just £99
